Community design that supports walking and bicycling is an essential element in the campaign to "get Americans moving." This lecture explores best practices in "design for active living" for urban and suburban communities and for diverse populations.

Spring 2005 - Reforming Suburbia: The Social Ideals of Privately Planned Communities

Lecture by Ann Forsyth, Professor, University of Minnesota, Dayton Hudson Chair of Urban Design and Director of Metropolitan Design Center. Co-sponsors: The Irvine Company; UCI Department of Planning, Policy, and Design; Research Initiative on Inequality and Social Justice.

In her new book "Reforming Suburbia: The Planned Communities of Irvine, Columbia, and The Woodlands," Professor Ann Forsyth "traces the evolution, the successes, and the shortcomings of these experiments in urban innovation" (University of California Press, 2004). Her presentation will examine, in particular, the success of planned communities in accommodating diverse populations.

This critical snapshot of the "State of the County" in 2005 identifies growing inequality as a major challenge for OC leaders in all sectors. In this lecture, leading researchers and professionals will discuss troubling trends in health care, housing, work and income, and racial/ethnic diversity in the County. These patterns reveal mounting social and economic disparities facing the region, and set important benchmarks for policy goals and practices to address these concerns.
