Franklin D. Gilliam Jr.,
Dean
Professor, Political Science & Political Science Universtiy of California, Los Angeles
 Frank Gilliam is dean of
the UCLA School of Public Affairs. He is a professor in the departments
of Political Science and Public Policy. He was the first ever Associate
Vice Chancellor, Community Partnerships in the UC system. He also is
the founding director of the UCLA Center for Communications and
Community. His research focuses on strategic communications and
public policy; electoral politics; and racial and ethnic politics.
He has been published in a wide range of academic journals (e.g., the
American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political
Science, the Journal of Politics, the Harvard International Journal of
Press/Politics, and the Metropolitan Universities Journal). He also
authored the 2001 book Farther to Go: Readings and Cases in African
American Politics (Harcourt).
He has consulted on a wide range of projects for national foundations
(e.g. Gates, Kellogg, and the California Endowment) and organizations.
He is frequently quoted in the national and international press. He
also makes frequent appearances on local and national news programs.
Professor Gilliam holds a B.A. from Drake University and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
Tania D. Mitchell,
Service Learning Director
Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) Stanford Universiy
 Dr. Mitchell works with CCSRE affiliated
faculty to develop service-learning courses and with students to
facilitate opportunities for community and public service that link
to their academic goals. She also directs CCSRE's thematic
concentration in Public Service and the Community Research Summer
Internship Program. Before joining CCSRE, Dr. Mitchell was Assistant
Professor and Coordinator for Service Learning Leadership at
California State University Monterey Bay where she developed the
nation's first academic minor in Service Learning Leadership. In
2006, Dr. Mitchell was recognized as an "Emerging Scholar" by the
International Association for Research in Service-Learning and Civic
Engagement (IARSLCE). A student development specialist by training,
her research explores service learning, social justice, and
leadership development in college students.

The conference will be held at the UCI Student Center.
